Maybe you have less energy than you used to. Maybe your drive has dipped, or an erection has changed and you don’t know whether to worry. That is usually why men search for men’s health and vitality.
Here is the short answer. Vitality is a whole-body state, not a single switch. For erection changes, energy dips or lower sex drive, a clinician is the right first stop. Nutrition and supplements are an optional add-on, and this guide covers what the research says about them and where their limits are.
This guide takes you through it in order: what vitality means, what to get checked, what the research says about nutrition and supplements, how to check a product before you pay, and which daily habits to start with.
| What vitality means | The WHO describes vitality capacity as a physiological state reflected in energy and metabolism, neuromuscular function, and immune and stress response (WHO working definition). |
| Key supplement trial (2019) | 57 men enrolled. 8 weeks of a standardized ashwagandha extract or placebo, in a 16-week crossover. Fatigue, vigor and sexual well-being improved in both groups, with no significant difference between them. Testosterone rose 14.7% more than placebo (trial record). |
| Erection changes | Need a clinician’s evaluation. This guide does not diagnose them. |
| Supplement safety | Dietary supplements have no mandate for assessing cardiovascular safety, according to a 2017 systematic review. |
| Reported adverse events | 79,071 supplement-related reports to the FDA’s CFSAN Adverse Event Reporting System, 2004 to 2021, per a 2023 narrative review. |
| Your first step | Keep a two-week log of energy, sleep, mood and sex drive. Then book a clinician visit. |
Where are you starting?
Step 1: Pin down what vitality means for you
Something feels less than it did, and you want a name for it. Vitality is a broad word, so start with a clear definition.
The World Health Organization’s 2022 working group, made up of WHO staff and twenty experts from six WHO regions, defined vitality capacity as a physiological state. It comes from several systems working together. Those systems are energy and metabolism, neuromuscular function, and immune and stress response. That is the most useful answer to what vitality does for men: it shapes how well your body makes and uses energy, moves, and responds to stress and challenges.
Vitality is not one switch you can flip. The research on boosting it tests very different levers. A 2020 randomized trial in the Journal of Medical Internet Research enrolled 69 healthy men. Half were assigned to six weeks of guided internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy combined with a serious game. The other half received no intervention. Self-reported vitality was the primary measure, and the program did not change it significantly.
The men in the program did report fewer sleep problems and bodily sensations straight after. Sleep and stress are worth tracking in your own log.
What this means for you: Before you buy anything, keep a two-week log of energy, sleep, mood and sex drive. It gives your clinician something concrete to work with.

Once you have that log, the next question is medical. That goes to a clinician.
Step 2: Get a clinician to look at the cause
You are probably deciding whether this is worth a doctor’s time. For changes in energy, drive or erections, it is.
Only a clinician who examines you and hears your history can work out what is going on. This guide cannot diagnose you. Bring your two-week log, a list of every medicine and supplement with its dose, and your written questions.
Ask which screenings and conditions matter at your age. That answers the “top men’s health issues” question for your own situation. If you want a book, ask your clinician or a librarian for a recent title written by a clinician.
Your clinician may look at the same systems the WHO definition names: energy and metabolism, muscle function, and stress and immune response. A visit gives you a baseline to compare against after any change.
What this means for you: A supplement cannot tell you why you feel this way. Book the visit first, then decide on anything extra.

If your question is about erections, the next step is a specific conversation, and the next chapter covers it.
Step 3: Take erection questions to a clinician first
If you’re asking how to get hard again, how to make your penis strong, or what helps a weak erection, this is where the quick answers stop and the clinician conversation starts.
Erection trouble is a question to take to a clinician. This guide does not name a cause or a treatment for you.
A clinician decides whether one suits you. They also check it against your other medicines, because some medicines interact with others.
Questions about how big a normal penis is, and whether any food helps, belong on the same list. Ask your clinician rather than a sales page. A clinician can tell you what is typical and what is worth checking.

Once you have a clinician’s view, you can look at supplements with clearer questions in mind.
Step 4: Weigh supplement claims against the studies
Supplements are one option sold for men’s energy and sex drive. This is where the research matters most.
The most directly relevant trial here is a 2019 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study in the American Journal of Men’s Health. It enrolled 57 overweight men aged 40 to 70 with mild fatigue. For 8 weeks they took a standardized ashwagandha extract (Shoden beads, delivering 21 mg of withanolide glycosides a day) or a placebo, in a 16-week crossover design. Of the 57, 50 finished the first 8 weeks and 43 finished all 16 weeks.
Both groups reported gains in fatigue, vigor and sexual and psychological well-being over time. The differences between the groups on those measures were not statistically significant. The clear difference was hormonal. The ashwagandha group’s DHEA-S rose 18% more than placebo, and testosterone rose 14.7% more. The authors wrote that larger studies are needed.
What this means for you: A hormone reading moving is not the same as feeling more vital. Ask your clinician whether a hormone test fits your case before you add anything that moves hormones.
To match any supplement claim to the study design behind it, read Ingredient Evidence vs. Marketing Claims: A Consumer’s Guide.
Safety is a separate question. A 2017 systematic review in the Journal of Dietary Supplements looked at 26 published supplement studies on QT/QTc heart-rhythm measures, with sample sizes from nine to 206 people. The review notes that dietary supplements have no mandate for assessing cardiovascular safety. Eight studies found a significant change in QT/QTc intervals, and more than 30% showed some degree of ECG change. Bring any heart history to your clinician before you start a supplement. For the regulator’s own information on supplements, check the U.S. Food and Drug Administration site before you buy.
A 2023 narrative review in Innovations in Pharmacy counted 79,071 supplement-related adverse event reports sent to the FDA’s CFSAN Adverse Event Reporting System between 2004 and 2021. Among the products with the highest report counts, it named vitamin E, beta-sitosterol, yohimbine, kava, kratom and garcinia cambogia. If a label you are considering lists any of these, take it to your clinician first.

Step 5: Check any product before you pay
You have seen an ad or a sales page, and now you want to know what you are actually buying.
Read a seller’s claims as the seller’s own statements. Then check them against the study design in Step 4. The table below lists what to pull from any product page.

| What to check | Where to look | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Ingredients and doses | The Supplement Facts panel on the label | Compare each dose with what a study used, such as the 21 mg of withanolide glycosides in the 2019 trial. |
| Duplicate ingredients | Every bottle you already take | Add the amounts together so you don’t go over a dose you intend. |
| Price | The checkout page, before you enter payment | Write down the total, shipping and any renewal date. Prices change, so use the checkout price you see today. |
| Refund and cancellation | The seller’s written returns and subscription terms | Copy the refund window, the return-shipping rule and the cancel steps word for word. |
| Seller’s claims | The product page and the ad | Record them as the seller’s statements, not as proof. |
| Ingredient names | The label’s ingredient list | Compare them with the names in the 2023 adverse event review in Step 4. |
Before you order
- Ask the seller for the full Supplement Facts panel in writing if the page does not show it.
- Confirm the total price, shipping and any renewal date at checkout.
- Find the refund window and the cancel steps, and save a copy.
- Check every ingredient against your medicines with your clinician.
- Make sure the product name and ingredients match what the ad described.

Step 6: Start with daily habits that steady your energy
You do not need to wait for a supplement to start something this week.
Several guides on this site explain food patterns for steadier energy through the day. Read them as food reading, not as a treatment plan. The 2020 trial touched on sleep and stress, so track those alongside your meals.
To judge any study you read about habits or supplements, How to Read a Clinical Study gives a plain-language method.
What this means for you: Pick one habit, such as meals, sleep or daily movement, and track it for two weeks beside your energy log. You and your clinician will both see what changes.
